New Year's Eve i recieved a msg, it read:

[苹果] 知道男人不可靠,
看 [色戒] 知道女人不可靠,
看 [头名状] 知道兄不可靠,
看 [集结号] 知道组织更不可靠,
看来只有我可靠给你带来新年的祝福#

Since i've already seen all the other films on this list apart from [Apple], i subsquently developed a curiousity towards the film and wanted know how it would lead us to believe that man are unreliable (although it is already common knowledge, 99% of the time to say the least)
Anyhow, so i decided to watch it....

Judging by the cover i thought it would be a sexually perverse, morally incorrect and purely commercial sort of film. A lower grade, home produced version of [色戒].
A women with her shirt slightly unbottoned leaning against a naked man in the background with his back to her, facing away.
she had a faint smile on her face which to most whould interpret it as a expression of love n contentment...bt to me it looked ever so provocative. It may sound a bit cliche but really i saw 2 things : Lust & Caution
it seems to me that she is giving out such temptation to the outside whilst maintaining a strong sense of self preservation from within.
With hair falling around her face, any man would look at her with hunger, she was like a juicy piece of meat just waiting to be eaten. And yes indeed she was literally n metaphorically.
A young girl starting out in the City with nothing bt her bare hands n pure faith n hope that maybe one day her n her newly wedded husband would climb out the social hierachy and become the very rich n even 'powerful' they work for 2day.
It is important to be told at this point that the City which the story was set in, is no other but the very city of 2008, the face of China
-Beijing.it is also a very special place for me which holds some of my sweetest memories tracing bac to early childhood....
For obvious reasons both characters took on dirty manual jobs that the native 'beijingers' neglected n despised upon. It was the norms for for Village emigrants to serve in the service sector, otherwise how else can the window cleaining firms keep their business n the massage parlors scattered all around the city keep their client?? The arduous tasks, bitter bosses, n constant attacks of humuliation from the previliged are just  commonly understood unwritten part of the job description. After all it is deep in our culture that we can achieve greatness through diligence and hardship. As the old saying outs it ' One cannot taste the sweet unless one's swollowed the bitter' rite??
Where as in the West people had turned to religion to find faith n direction, modern chinese had found that essential power in themselves at times of hardship. It is indeed this entrepreneural quality that had led China through its new Economic Revival n the peak of the Economic Success of today. BUt of course nothing is perfect, along with preveiling Capitalist policies so it also came class inequality. A social n economical phenomenon experienced by most Capitalist states all throughout the world.
However, if there was one thing that i would truely praise this film for, it would definately be its fearless display of the ever widening inequality in our supposedly communist state. The film was clever in chosing the very profession of window cleaning n feet rubbing; i find it ironic how the humble cleans our trophies of economic victory making our city looking ever so beautiful n the unworthy place their hands on intiamte parts of our body in return for money.
New York the paradigm n showcase of Capitalism has long been nicknamed the 'Big Apple'-where everyone can take a bite n get a gd taste of the juicy favour
With our stunning double figure growth rates every year, some optimists say that China is becoming the new US n thereafter Beijing becoming the new NYC.........bt the question is is this big apple really big enough for everyone to all just take one bite beyond borders of origin n class?

to be continued....
